European legislators approved acts aimed at reforming the energy market with a view to conserving tropical forests in the countries of South-East Asia. The bill provides for a ban on the use of palm oil in the production of biofuel from 2021.
Asian countries for the production of palm oil cut down about a million hectares of rainforest, which are replaced by plantings of the oil palm. The use of other oilseeds in the production of biofuels is not subject to restrictions or a complete ban.
Malaysia has already criticized the EU decision, calling it a discrimination against the countries that produce palm oil. The Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia promised to take retaliatory measures towards the EU concerning trade relations between the countries.
