Pork production will reach 3.7m tons

This year the production of pork in the industrial sector will increase by almost 200 thousand tons and exceed 3.15m tons (hereinafter - in slaughter weight), and the total volume will reach 3.7m tons. This forecast was voiced by the Director General of the National Union of Swine Breeders (NSS) Yuri Kovalev during the annual meeting of the union.

In addition, there are structural changes in the industry, in particular, the share of smallholdings declines. If in 2005 they produced about 1.1m tons or 72% of the whole pork in the country, then by the results of 2017 the indicators decreased to 576 thousand tons and 16%. This year the NSS expects further production cuts in the smallholdings - up to 548 thousand tons and 15%. By 2022, the share of smallholdings will decrease to 9%, they will produce about 400 thousand tons of pork.

Yuri Kovalev also noted that the consolidation of the industry is continuing. Thirteen years ago, about three quarters of companies from the current top-20 largest pork producers either did not exist at all or they did not engage in pig production. In 2010, 20 leading players produced 45% of the total volume of pork produced in the agricultural enterprises of the country. Last year, their market share increased to more than 60% and continues to grow. In the next five years, according to the forecast of the NSS, the total production of pork in agricultural enterprises can increase by 900 thousand tons or 31% to the level of 2017, to more than 3.8m tons.

In the first half of 2018, the production of pork in Russia, according to the NSS, increased by 8.4% or 135 thousand tons to more than 1.7 million tons, including the growth in production in organizations was 10.7%, then there is a dynamics maintained at the level of the Q4 2017.
