World egg production up 24%

Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) show that total egg production over the past ten years has grown by 24%: from 61.7 million tons in 2008 to 76.7 million tons in 2018.

China has been a leader in this growth for 30 years. In 2018, 466 billion pieces were produced in China in 2018, which is 34% of the total global egg market. Rapid economic growth, improved supply chains and favorable prices were the main reasons for the growth of the egg market in China. China is followed by the EU, USA and India. The four leaders produce almost 60% of the eggs in the world, while the next 6 countries (Mexican, Brazil, Russia, Japan, Indonesia, Turkey) occupy another 16% of the market. Thus, 10 countries account for more than 3 ⁄ 4 of global egg production.
