According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Japan, African swine fever outbreaks were recorded in five prefectures of Japan, including Osaka. Moreover, the Japanese ASF strain is different from the Chinese.
The first outbreak of the disease was recorded in Gifu Prefecture in September 2018. Now the disease was recorded in Aichi Prefecture, and this is the first time since the discovery of the disease in Gifu. Pigs from the Aichi farm were sent to a farm in Osaka and to farms in three more perfections. All of these pigs were infected with ASF. To prevent the disease spread, 15 thousand animals will be destroyed. According to the ministry official, pigs shipped from Aichi’s farm to a pig farm in Osaka and to three other prefectures were also infected with ASF, adding that about 15,000 pigs on affected farms will be destroyed and discarded.
