The conference 'Starch and Starch Products: Market of Opportunities' ended

On November 28, the III conference "Starch and Starch Products", organized by the Association of Russian Manufacturers of Starch and Molasses 'Roskrakhmalpatoka', was held. This year the event was attended by leading industry experts and representatives of Russian and international companies. The event was attended by specialists from Switzerland, Belgium, China and Russia. During the conference, a dialogue was held between producers and consumers of starch, forecasts for the development of the industry were given, issues of possible mechanisms for the output of products on foreign markets, trends in food and processing industries in Russia and in the world were considered.

Conference speakers were representatives of major industry companies in Europe and Russia. Velamur Krishnakumar, Executive Director of the GIRACT, reported on trends in the global industry of starch and its derivatives:

"We expect global demand for food starch to grow by 3.2% CAGR by 2022. Currently, the share of food modifications in the global production of starch is 19%. Modified starches have great technical functionality and account for 22% of global starch production."

Juliette Jacques, Deputy Managing Director-Starch Europe, reported on new trends in the European market. According to Starch Europe, of the 5.3 million tons of vegetable proteins and fibers produced by the European starch industry in 2017, 1.1 million tons are classified as products with a very high protein content (protein content above 60%). As a consequence of the growing preference for vegetarianism, especially in Europe, some proteins are increasingly used in foods as an alternative to animal proteins. Such proteins are a useful alternative for consumers on a vegetarian or vegan diet who need to find a diverse source of protein.

Andrey Vusyk, Deputy General Director of Myande Group Co, reported on the Chinese market for starch and its derivatives. In 2018, corn starch production reached 28.15 million tons, an increase of 8.5% compared to 2017. And the molasses production in China in 2018 amounted to 13.54 million tons, an increase of 15.04% compared to previous years.

The current status of the Russian starch industry and related industries was commented on by Pavel Paramonov, Market Research Manager, Cargill LLC; Marina Sidak, Head of Analytical Services, Syukden Group (Russia); Alla Danilovtseva, Deputy General Director of Rosspirtprom JSC; Ekaterina Luchkina, Executive Director of the National Union of Meat Processors.

The president of the Roskrakhmalpatoka Association Oleg Radin is confident in the need for such events, which are both educational and discussion platforms:

"The event was held as one strategic session. We specifically chose this format, combining reports on global trends and the positioning of the domestic industry in this paradigm. And in my opinion, we succeeded, did not even meet the planned 2.5 hours. The discussion turned out to be lively, deep and dynamic. In the future, we plan to adhere to a similar format".

This year the event was attended by 38 participants, as well as representatives of industry magazines. At present, the audience’s interest in narrow-profile events dedicated to key trends in commodity markets is especially noticeable.
