China-US: getting warmer?

For the first time in 18 months, Chinese authorities approved the import of genetically modified crops from the United States. Observers consider this fact to be another sign of the warming of Sino-US relations against the background of the trade negotiations taking place in Beijing.

As the Ministry of Agriculture of China has announced, permits have been issued for the import of five GM crops, including two types of rapeseed — Bayer and Monsanto, DuPont corn, and Syngenta and Dow AgroSciences soybeans. In addition, China Grain Reserves Corp. (Sinograin), which is responsible for the gathering of grain state reserves in China, purchased from 20 to 25 soya beans shipments in the United States, a total of 1.3M to 1.5M tons, traders told Bloomberg.

China is the largest importer of soybeans in the world and is among the leaders in the procurement of a number of other crops.
