German pork livestock continues to decline

In November 2018, Germany reported a 4% reduction in the number of pigs compared with a year earlier, according to data from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

AHDB analysts point out that preliminary results from November may indicate the possibility of a noticeable reduction in the supply of pigs in Germany at the beginning of this year. And the situation may worsen due to the continued decline in the importation of Dutch slaughter pigs.

In November last year, Germany reported a reduction of 4% in the number of sows. Experts note that the situation has worsened compared to May 2018, as the rate of decline in the number of pigs in the country is only increasing. According to the results of May 2018, the number of sows decreased by less than 3% year on year. The number of piglets and young pigs also decreased during the period by 5%. At the same time, the number of pig farms in Germany decreased to 7,800 units, i.e. by 6% in 2018.
