Pork prices rose sharply in the Baltic countries

The epidemic of African swine fever in China has affected the situation in the Baltic meat market. Now meat processing companies in Lithuania are buying raw materials at prices 30% higher than last year. Despite the fact that in September there was some stabilization of prices, business believes that pork will rise in price in the next two to three years.

This opinion was expressed by the head of the country's largest pig-breeding company Idavang Saulius Leonavičius. The increase in pork prices is confirmed by monitoring data from the Lithuanian Agricultural Information and Rural Business Center. In January-September 2019, the average purchase price for pigs was 9.1% higher than in the same period of 2018. In September, it grew by 22% year on year. According to the Lithuanian Meat Processing Association (LMPA), retail prices for pork began to rise significantly in the spring, and currently they have grown by 30%.

The Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) has included current information on rising pork prices in the news program. According to Anne Mere, Chairman of the Board of HKScan Estonia, purchase prices for pork in Estonia increased by 40%, and for high-quality raw materials for sausages - by 50%.
