The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies has confirmed an outbreak of classical swine fever (CSF) in the country.
The disease has been confirmed on a private farm. The culling and destruction of animals were the first measures taken by local authorities, and now the region will undergo an investigation within a radius of 10 km from the infected facility, as well as in all farms with some epidemiological link, the ministry said.
The Brazilian CSF-free zone of Brazil, recognized this year by the World Organization for Animal Health, covers 17 states, which contain more than 95% of the total Brazilian pig head, but Ceára does not belong to this zone. The total exports of Brazilian pork products and pigs come from this CSF-free zone. Japan also reported an outbreak of classical swine fever last month.
