Russia plans to produce biodegradable tableware from hemp

The production of hemp-based cellulose is planned by the Konoplex Group. It can be used to produce biodegradable tableware and bags, as well as other types of environmentally friendly products - textiles and pharmaceuticals. About RUR 2 billion ($ 27.34 million) will be invested in the project. The payback period is up to 15 years.

The new production site will be located in the Penza region. The production capacity will allow receiving 4,000 tons of cellulose per year. These results are expected to be achieved by 2026. Products will be made from hemp and flax, as well as jute, kenaf and other crops. It should be noted that cellulose from bast crops is closest in its characteristics to cotton, which Russia is forced to import. Now, chemical industries will be able to use Russian raw materials.
