EU: forecast for wheat and barley is lowered again

Strategie Grains experts in their latest report again made significant downward adjustments to the forecast of wheat production in the EU this year due to abnormally dry weather conditions in the northern regions of Europe, which will lead to a significant reduction in grain yield in Germany and Scandinavia, Reuters reports.

As specified, the agency experts have lowered the forecast of gross wheat harvest in the EU to 127.7m tons against 130 million tons in July, which is inferior to the forecast in June of this year (132.4m tons). Thus, the yield of European wheat in 2018 is already 10% below that of the previous year. Also, strategists at Strategie Grains lowered the barley production forecast in the EU to 57.1m tons, which is 2.5m tons lower than the previous forecast and 2 percent below 2017. It is specified that in Poland, Germany, the Baltic countries and Scandinavia, as well as France, Italy and Great Britain, grain yield indicators will significantly decrease. At the same time, the assessment of corn production was increased by 700 thousand tons to 61.3m tons (+ 3% per year).
