The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international food prices, averaged 172.4 points in May, up 1.2 percent from the previous month.
In May, pork prices continued to grow due to high import demand, especially from East Asia, mainly due to lower production associated with the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in the region. Lamb prices also received a boost from strong import demand, despite record volumes of exports from Oceania, while poultry prices remained stable, reflecting well-balanced market conditions. In contrast, beef prices have fallen from highs recorded in April.
The price index for meat is calculated based on the average cost of the four main types of meat (beef, pork, lamb, poultry).
