Kaliningrad authorities will support meat processing due to ASF outbreak

The government of Kaliningrad region will subsidize the interest rate for meat processing enterprises and monitor their pricing policy, regional governor Anton Alikhanov told Interfax.

"We met with pork processors and producers and agreed that by the end of the month we will determine the volume and the way we will support them, but we will have certain requirements on how they conduct their pricing policy. They will have to reveal this information to us," Anton Alikhanov said. According to him, the regional Ministry of Agriculture currently determines the amount of possible subsidies. Preliminary, it is about several tens of millions of rubles (several hundred thousand dollars).

Kaliningrad region has a certain pork deficit due to ASF outbreak now. Lack of raw materials can be replenished with supplies from other regions of Russia, but the price will be higher. Pravdinskoye Pork Production (part of the Russian Baltic Pork Invest ASA Group, RBPI Group) was the main supplier of pork in the region (11,000 tons per year). The company suffered from the ASF outbreak, more than 111 thousand animals will be destroyed. For the first time the ASF virus in Kaliningrad region was detected in November 2017 in wild boars. In 2018, the ASF virus began to spread rapidly across the region.
