Drought threatens Russian crop

Analysts expressed their assumptions about the projected yields due to dry weather in a number of Russian regions.

The lack of rain in several Russian regions in the coming weeks could seriously affect the grain harvest this year. Under unfavorable conditions, the indicator, which reached a record 135m tons in 2017, could fall to 105m tons. This will be the minimum value from 2014-2015 and will support prices on the world wheat market, where Russia has become a key player.

The greatest threat to drought is for spring crops. Winter crops, based on yield, could well survive the drought of recent months due to moisture reserves, Andrei Sizov, director of Sovekon says. Now the center's analysts forecast the collection of spring wheat at the level of 18.4m tons, which may become the minimum value since 2014. For comparison, the harvest of winter wheat is expected to be 51.1m tons, the lowest since 2015.
