Consumption of turkey in the US declines for the second year in a row. It is predicted that this year the decline will be 0.3 pounds (0.14 kg.) after a decrease of 0.2 pounds (0.09 kg.) in 2017.
This contrasts with beef consumption in 2018, which should increase by 0.1 pounds (0.045 kg.) , pork - by 0.5 pounds (0.23 kg.). The modest increase in beef consumption this year followed a 1.4 pound (0.64 kg.) increase last year. Chicken consumption is growing even faster: the annual increase is 1.2 and 1.7 pounds (0.54 и 0.77 kg.) per person in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
The demand for bird carcass, as a rule, grows in the Q4 due to holidays: Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. But this year, consumption seems to follow the trend of the previous quarters. Turkey wholesale prices were 20% lower than in 2017, which should attract the attention of consumers, but the producers are not so sure.
