EFSA consults industry on food and feed nanotechnology guidance

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has opened a public consultation on its draft guidance for the risk assessment of nanoscience and nanotechnology applications in the food and feed chain. It is expected that EFSA will discuss the new draft rules until March 2018. New changes were proposed based on research conducted since 2011, and offering a wide range of new products based on the application of nanotechnology, reports feednavigator.com.

In particular, the use of nanomaterials that absorb certain types of pathogenic bacteria looks extremely promising. Potentially, such nanomaterials can become an invaluable alternative to fodder antibiotics. At the same time, EFSA also had to take into account the results of research by a group of Australian scientists, which were published in the latest issue of Trends in Food Science and Technology. It states that nanomaterials are still poorly understood, so that their large-scale application can be resolved.
