Russian government: excise taxes on sausage as a healthcare tool

The expert council under the Government of the Russian Federation had the idea of introducing excise taxes on red meat products. In the case of a new tax, the price of sausage can grow by about a third.

The tax will be about 160 RUR / 1 kg product ($ 2.42). The proposal is set out in the Council’s response to the Strengthening Public Health Program, which was developed as part of the Demography National Project. The initiative's authors note that sausage, bacon and other processed meat products contain a large amount of carcinogens. Eating such food increases the risk of cancer.

At the expense of the proceeds after the introduction of excise taxes, it is proposed to reduce the prices of useful products. Experts believe that this action will contribute to the increase in life expectancy of the population. The Ministry of Health approved the document. But the Ministry of Agriculture and meat producers did not support the initiative. In addition, the Russian authorities are preparing an excise on lemonade.

Omsky Biocluster Press Secretary Ravshana Balloyeva

"We are witnessing an absolutely clumsy attempt to increase the tax burden on the producers of the meat sector. The argument is in the StandUp style. The consequence will be an increase in production in the illegal sector and an increase in the level of corruption in the supervisory authorities. We hope that the Russian government will listen to those who feed the country."
