The Russian Agricultural Bank (the Omsk branch is the Omsky Biocluster member) devoted the third agricultural session on topical issues of agro-industry for the dairy market development. The event was attended by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, the National Dairy Producers Union, the business community, including retail and farmers.
The topic of discussion was the general trends in the production of milk and dairy products. Special attention was paid to the risks against the background of the pandemic, tools of state support and the potential for the implementation of new projects. The agenda of the event included all levels of the value chain.
The increased relevance of import substitution for the dairy industry is confirmed by the data presented at the meeting by the RusAg Center for Industry Expertise. Although over the past five years, the share of imports has decreased from 22% to 19%, this is almost twice the limit set by the Food Security Doctrine. At the same time, in 2019, milk production in all categories of farms increased by 2.4% and reached 31.3 million tons. The forecast for 2020 is even greater, about 32 million tons.
Along with a gradual decrease in the share of imports, one of the main trends in the final five-year period, from 2016 to 2020, was a gradual increase in consumption to 34.8 million tons (+1 million tons). However, at the same time, analysts recorded a decrease in the share of production by villagers from 42% to 36%. According to Rosstat, the actual consumption of dairy products in Russia is still below the recommendations of the Ministry of Health.
Summing up the event, the participants noted that the Russian milk market has reached a high level of maturity and retains significant potential for growth. At the same time, everyone agreed that investments in dairy production and processing require a thorough preliminary analysis of sales markets, sales channels, competitive environment and government support measures.
