Peak grain exports threaten the meat market

Harvesting of cereals in Russia is in full swing. The expected harvest is predicted at 103m tons. At least a third of this volume will be exported. At the same time, the regions are asking the government to limit the grain export. Farmers fear that grain is not enough for domestic consumption, in particular, for livestock feed. The grain deficit can provoke a sharp rise in the meat price.

The cost of feed, which directly depends on the export prices for grain, significantly affects the cost of poultry meat and pork. So, according to the National Union of Swine Breeders, only a third of pork producers are provided with their own grain, they have accumulated stocks, but if the grain continues to rise in the domestic market, this may affect the cost of meat.

In turn, exporters do not rule out that the government can return the export duty for wheat, which was in Russia in 2015-2016. The risk of imposing any restrictions on grain exports from the Russian Federation has recently increased, experts say, prices are rising against the backdrop of another round of devaluation of the ruble against the dollar, and the authorities are looking for new sources of revenue.
