6,000 new pig farms to be built in China

In 2020, the Chinese government approved the construction of 6,200 new pig farms, as the authorities would like to restrict pork imports, which in the first half of 2020 exceeded the total imports for the entire 2019.

"China's imports of pork and by-products in July amounted to 560,000 tonnes, up 87.1% year-on-year," said Lyle Jones, the Director of Sales for Genesus China. The new forecast for 2020 indicates that pork imports for the whole year will reach 3.9 million tons, almost double the volume of imports in 2019.

The recovery of the pig population is stimulated not only by government subsidies for the construction of farms, but also by large investments from abroad. Pork production in the country is expected to recover somewhat during the second half of 2020, but may still be below normal levels as ASF is still spreading in China, making it even more difficult to recover the livestock. In addition, the spread of Covid-19 in the country is now well controlled, so the consumption of pork in restaurants, schools and other companies is quickly recovering. Therefore, demand is expected to grow.
