Russian companies will bet on sweets

The production of confectionery products in Russia from 2015 to 2019 increased by 11% and amounted to 2.05 million tons. The largest increase was recorded last year (3.4% compared to 2018). This was due to an increase in export supplies of products against the backdrop of a low ruble against the dollar.

The prerequisites for import substitution and production growth arose in connection with the ban on the supply of flour confectionery products manufactured by Ukrainian companies, introduced in December 2018. The growth in demand for confectionery was also noted within Russia. Most Russians consider sweets an integral part of their daily diet and do not save money on sweets.

As for the structure of the production of flour confectionery products in Russia, last year sweet biscuits prevailed (0.74 million tons were produced, which is 36.1% of the total production). Waffles and wafers were produced at 0.29 million tons (14.4%). Gingerbread production amounted to 0.19 million tons (9.2%), cakes were produced 0.18 million tons (8.9%).

The production of flour confectionery products in Russia during 2020-2024 will continue to increase by 0.8-1.8% per year, according to BusinesStat analysts. The reason is the growth in exports against the backdrop of the depreciation of the ruble, as well as due to high prices for other confectionery products in the domestic market. It should be noted that the production of products will grow due to the expansion of the range. The production of sweet biscuits will increase, which has become one of the most affordable types of sweets for Russians in the face of falling incomes of the population. In 2024, Russia will produce 2.18 million tons of confectionery. This exceeds the indicators of 2019 by 6.4%.
