African swine fever reached Vietnam: outbreaks were found on three farms in the provinces of Hung Yen and Thai Binh, located southeast of Hanoi.
All the pigs on farms in these two regions were sent for slaughter, the Vietnamese Animal Health Department said. According to experts, the ASF virus could get into an Asian country from neighboring China, where the African plague has already spread in 25 provinces, along with products from infected pork. Pork accounts for three quarters of total meat consumption in Vietnam, where 95 million people live. The number of pigs on farms in the country is about 30 million animals, and most of the pork produced is sold domestically.
