Eurodon Group: avian flu again

Avian influenza was detected for the third time in three years on one of the sites of the Rostov turkey meat manufacturer - Eurodon Group. Now the disease will not cause destruction of the entire population. At the same time, competitors - other major producers of turkey in Russia - have the same problems, and the demand for turkey today exceeds supply.

According to the president of the consulting company Agrifood Strategies Albert Davleev, the main reason for the regular occurrence of avian flu foci is the lack of control over the private possessions of rural residents. "The spread of the disease occurs solely by the delivery of young animals on private possessions for supplementary feeding, during the spring-summer period. In connection with the lack of proper supervision by the regional veterinary service and federal agencies over the condition of birds in private possessions, outbreaks occur from Tatarstan to Kursk region. No company, even working in a closed loop mode, is able to 100% protect itself from the outbreak that could occur in a village near the poultry house," the expert says.

The avian flu virus caused the colossal losses of Eurodon LLC. In the winter of 2016, the company's poultry farms had to destroy 700,000 turkey heads. In the spring of 2017 - 300 thousand heads. The company's total losses amounted to about 2.6b RUR ($ 41.34m). As Expert-Yug wrote earlier, in October 2017 the Eurodon Group and Vnesheconombank (the main creditor and owner of 40% of the shares of the group of companies) signed an agreement on additional financing to compensate for financial losses.

In the current year, avian flu caused damage to another large turkey meat manufacturer in Russia - Damate Group (60,000 tons of meat in slaughter weight in 2017). In June of this year, about 10% of the company's total livestock was destroyed to localize the disease outbreak - about 470 thousand head. According to the estimates of the company, the total losses of Damate Group will be about 400m RUR ($ 6.36m).

However, according to Albert Davleev, turkey meat manufacturers show a positive dynamics of development even in conditions of unfavorable epizootic situation. Tambovskaya Indeyka company (Cherkizovo Group) , became the third major producer of turkey in Russia (except for Eurodon Group and Damate Group).
