Export volumes of fresh / frozen pork from the EU rose again in June compared to last year. Excluding shipments from the UK, volumes were 43% higher than in June 2019 and reached 250,000 tonnes, according to an analyst report from the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
"It will not come as a surprise that the continued growth in EU export performance is supporting the Chinese market. Shipments to this market have been growing since the beginning of this year, reaching 159,000 tonnes in June (114% more than last year). China is still interested in pork imports due to a decrease in domestic production caused by African swine fever," the AHDB notes.
The volume of export of by-products from the EU in June amounted to 110,000 tons, this figure is lower than last year - 11%, but still noticeable. The volume of demand in this segment is also provided by China, having purchased 78,000 tons of products, which is 30% more than last year. Shipments to Thailand, the Philippines and Hong Kong instead dropped slightly.
Despite the constant demand for meat products from China, prices for products exported to this destination have not increased in recent months. In value terms, the export of pig meat and by-products from the EU amounted to 2 euros / kg in June, which is almost 0.2 euros lower than in May and 0.8 euros lower than at the end of last year. Recently, however, domestic prices in the Asian country have risen, which may indicate a strengthening in imported pork prices.
