Dozens of new regional brands may appear in Russia after the 'Vologda Butter' and 'Belevian Pastille'. Registration of rights to them will be facilitated by the appearance in the Civil Code of a new concept - 'geographical indication'. Experts note that this will change the rules of the game in the market. A great importance in marketing positioning will receive an indication of the origin of the goods.
The Federation Council together with Rospatent plan to add to the Civil Code a new concept: 'geographical indication'. Registration of geographical signs on goods will allow their producers to attract the attention of consumers. Buyers will know for sure that the product is placed where indicated on the packaging. For example, Karelian cloudberries will turn out to be Karelian, not Arkhangelsk.
The deputy head of Rospatent Lyubov Kiriy specified that for Russia the 'geographical indication' is a new term. At the same time, it is used in the national legislation of many countries. Registration of a geographical indication will require only to confirm that the goods are produced exactly in the area indicated on the packaging. Such registration will take place in an accelerated manner, Izvestia was told in the public council of Rospatent.
