Omsk region is preparing to receive a new grain harvest

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Omsk region discussed preparations for the acceptance of grain from the 2019 harvest. In his opening remarks, Minister Nikolai Drofa told about the harvesting campaign, noting that at present the preparation of grain elevators, grain flows, storage facilities, asphalt pads of grain flow farming has already been completed for the acceptance and processing of the grown crop.

Deputy Minister Ivan Trofimov spoke about the readiness of grain elevators to accept grain from farmers for the current year's crop. Also, Ivan Trofimov dwelt in detail on the sale of grain by rail to other regions, including for export. He noted that in January – June of the current year, 990,000 tons of grain were shipped outside the Omsk region, which is at the level of 2018. Grain shipping by rail for the reporting period increased and amounted to 707,000 tons, which is 10% more than in 2018. The volume of grain exports in the Omsk region in January – June of the current year amounted to 126,000 tons, which is 29% or 52,200 tons less than the corresponding period in 2018.

In addition, the deputy minister drew attention to the creation of the Siberia Grain logistics company, the founder of which is the Government of the Omsk region, and the region’s agricultural producers as its shareholders. The project has three key tasks. Firstly, the sale of shareholder products, primarily grain and oilseeds, on the world market at prices that are significantly higher than prices on the domestic market of Russia. Secondly, wholesale purchases of necessary goods for agricultural producers, including fuels, lubricants and fertilizers. And, thirdly, taxes and dividends from the new enterprise, which will replenish the regional budget. It is assumed that the logistics company will also be engaged in the acceptance, processing and storage of grain, the introduction of production technologies, trade in seeds, agricultural machinery and technological equipment, electronic commerce, advertising and promotion of product brands, and will provide transport and other services.

Nevertheless, a source in the Government of the Omsk region, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that the implementation of the Siberia Grain project would be difficult. He attributes this to the multidirectional economic interests among grain producers and the uncertainty in the format of interaction between the logistics operator and Omsk grain producers.
