On average, the wholesale price for chicken in January amounted to 117.2 thousand rubles per ton ($1773), which is 21.8 % more than a year ago. In wholesale, on January 14, the price was fixed at 152.7 rubles per kilogram ($2.31). This is 22.4 % more than in 2018.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, the main reason for the increase in prices is last year’s bird flu outbreak, due to which several domestic producers suffered at once. Poultry farms have already begun to recover, which led to price adjustments: since the beginning of the year they have decreased by 0.2 %. Market participants interviewed by the publication cited several other reasons: the decline in imports, rising prices for feed and fuel. The 'low base effect' in the form of too low prices in early 2018 was also one of the reasons. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, prices for beef and pork also increased, but their growth was moderate: beef went up in retail prices by 3.4 % by January 2018, pork - by 8 %.
