Cattle breeding will double milk yields

The Ministry of Agriculture plans to revise the financing of dairy cattle. In particular, more funds can be directed to breeding work. According to the members of the expert group of the Ministry, improving the genetics of cattle will double its productivity, Izvestia writes.

The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia has formed an expert group that plans to revise the legislation in the field of livestock breeding. According to the document signed by the Minister Alexander Tkachev, the group included representatives of the Department of Animal Husbandry of the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as heads of branch unions and research institutes.

Executive Director of the National Union of Milk Producers Artem Belov, who joined the expert group, told Izvestia that one of the tasks in the field of dairy cattle breeding is "work on raising the genetic potential of domestic dairy cattle." In his opinion, the productivity of livestock will increase if the majority of allocations made by the state will be directed specifically at improving the breeds of cows, for selection work.

"Now the average productivity (milk yield from one cow) in Russia is about 5 tons per year, compared to 11 tons in the USA and more than 12 tons in Israel. Successful development of dairy cattle breeding is impossible without sustained growth in animal productivity. it is important to pay more attention to breeding work," Artem Belov explained.

The expert recalled that in 2016 26 billion rubles ($ 450 million) were allocated from the budget for dairy cattle breeding. Of these, only about 10% was aimed at improving the genetics of livestock. However, as Artem Belov explained, even these funds are not always spent efficiently. In order to achieve their optimal distribution, it is necessary to amend the legislation - that is the law about breeding livestock.
