EU updates the organic production rules

The EU Council and the European Parliament agreed to update the organic production rules. This will meet the needs of this sector, which is now growing rapidly.

Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan:

"We believe that the new law will be consistent with the dynamics and expectations of this fast-growing sector, support its development, and remove the obstacles to the sustainable development of organic production in the EU, thereby guaranteeing fair competition between farmers and operators, and improving control and consumer confidence."

The draft law, in order to increase consumer confidence, provides for toughening standards for the use of seed, fertilizers, transportation rules, and the introduction of strict control over all risks in the production of organic.
