Hemp returns to the field

The sowing of technical hemp required for the manufacture of rough fabrics increased by 57% compared to last year and reached 4.5 thousand hectares. Since 2018, regions where hemp and flax are traditionally grown will be able to receive preferential loans for the modernization and construction of new processing enterprises. Also now, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation has approved a draft law that will allow subsidizing the crops of flax and hemp at the expense of the federal budget. According to experts, now virtually all the hemp necessary to Russia is imported, and it is necessary to increase own capacities tenfold.

Hemp is cultivated in five regions of the Russian Federation - Orel, Penza and Novosibirsk regions, the Republic of Mordovia and the Altai Territory. This technical culture is the raw material for the production of coarse fabrics and ropes. Gross harvest of hemp in 2016 was 620 tons, which is 25% more than in 2015. But this volume does not amount to even one percent of the raw materials necessary for Russian industry. In 2017, cultural crops increased by 57% compared to last year and reached 4.5 thousand hectares. And yet this is not enough, so the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation is preparing a program for additional subsidization of the industry.

According to the press service of the ministry, modern technologies used in the hemp industry (this is growing, harvesting and processing), can provide high profitability. The bill, which proposes to subsidize from the federal budget areas of flax and hemp at a rate of 10 thousand rubles ($ 172,79) per 1 hectare, is currently being studied at the coordination in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.
