April 5, 2017 Director of the Department of Livestock and Breeding of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia Kharon Amerkhanov held a meeting on the establishment of a breeding and genetic center for the development of dairy cattle in Belgorod region.
"We have made serious progress in increasing the indicators of poultry and pig production, now our task is to increase dairy cattle breeding, using all available reserves," said Kharon Amerkhanov. He noted that the establishment of the center is important for the effective implementation of the existing genetic potential and the improvement of breed and productive qualities in dairy cattle. At the meeting, a pilot business project was presented to create a large breeding and genetic center, which is planned to be implemented in Belgorod region with the support of the region and the federal center. The project envisages the creation of a modern center for the production of breeding material and a laboratory for genomic evaluation. After the joint development with scientific organizations, unions and Reproduction Head Center of Agricultural Animals JSC, the project will be submitted for discussion to the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia in accordance with the established procedure.
Head of Omsky Biocluster's Genetics and Breeding of Cattle Practice Anatoly Shulakov:
"The Selective Genetic Center is not only a strategically important resource, but requires considerable financial investments and scientific efforts. In my opinion, it is more rational to have a limited number of such centers (enough three to four for the whole of Russia), which will produce the necessary quantity of breeding material to meet the needs of our producers. The development of a system of universal information and consulting centers with the functionality of "all inclusive" is the most in demand today. The entrepreneur apply to the center and receives a full range of services, the target indicator is one - the effectiveness of the dairy business! Structures that exfoliate the functions of such centers already operate in Omsk region and nearby regions of Siberia. I believe that the main principle of the work of such structures should be self-financing, which will confirm the effectiveness and functionality of the structure. Otherwise, we will spend budget money without benefit for dairy farming. We plan to develop and within the expert community to discuss the functioning of such a center for the development of dairy cattle in Omsk region."
