The Rusagro Head: the use of GMOs is inevitable

The use of genetically modified organisms and antibiotics in the food industry is inevitable. This opinion was expressed in an interview with RNS CEO Rusagro Maxim Basov.

According to Basov, it is impossible to predict the consequences of an accelerated mutation. As a consequence, there is a danger in using GMO technologies. However, the law banning the cultivation and breeding of GM plants and animals in Russia, the businessman believes, is hindering the development of agriculture. Sooner or later the country will come to GMOs and antibiotics, like the whole world. It is important to keep track of which drugs are used and in what quantities, said Basov.

The Russian Federation has established strict control over the use of antibiotics in food production, so domestic products are more natural than in other countries, the source said. The law prohibiting the cultivation of GM plants and the breeding of GM animals has been in effect in Russia since July 4, 2016. The use of GMOs is currently permitted only for scientific purposes.

Omsky Biocluster experts note that the prohibition of GMOs in Russia is a natural advantage of domestic agroproducts, including in foreign markets. Increasing the competitiveness of livestock products should not be based on the use of GMOs, but on the efficient conduct of business and the production in the country of affordable fodder protein of vegetable origin.
