USDA: Barley reserves will be minimal over the past 30 years

The world's final barley reserves in season-2017/18 will amount to only 17.5 million tons, which is 29% below the expected result of the current season, and will be the minimum figure for the last 30 years.

As experts say, the attractiveness of this crop for many farmers is decreasing, which leads to a reduction in the world's sown area, and as a consequence, to a decrease in the gross harvest of barley. In the season-2017/18, experts expect the world barley sowing area to decrease by 960 thousand hectares per year - to 47.2 million hectares, which will be minimal since 1960.

In particular, in the US this figure will decrease to 2.5 million acres - the minimum result since 1910. In Australia in the season-2017/18, the barley sowing area, after a record production in the current season, will return to the average annual rates. The reduction of barley yield in the next season is also expected in Canada, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
